Drama

Academy Players have a proud tradition of presenting a wide range of theatrical experiences for their appreciative audiences.

This year has been a remarkable one for the Drama and Performing Arts Department, showcasing the incredible talent, creativity, and dedication of both staff and students.

Our November 2024 production of ‘The Addams Family Musical’ was nothing short of a triumph, with sold-out performances on both evening shows and an additional matinee performance for local primary schools, which was met with enthusiastic applause. Directed by Miss Reynolds, with musical direction by Mrs Craig, and choreography by Mrs Murray, Miss Ross, and Mrs Douglas, the production was a testament to teamwork and artistic vision.

Mrs Coulter’s stunning costumes and Mrs Hunter’s makeup designs brought the characters to life, while the cast, composed of pupils from Years 9 to 14, delivered outstanding performances. Among the cast, James Burns (Pugsley), one of our youngest members, impressed everyone with his talent.

The principal roles were exceptionally portrayed by Ruby Wilkinson (Wednesday), Alex Suitters (Morticia), Ewan Mewha (Gomez), Jonno Christie (Fester), Ellie Sloan (Grandma), Gavin Kerr
(Lurch), Dan Patterson (Mal), Emma Dempsey (Alice), and Callum Ritchie
(Lucas). The ensemble of Ancestors provided a dynamic and captivating presence throughout the production. The cast was thrilled to reunite during Open Nights, where they stayed in character to interact with parents and children.

These evenings included engaging activities and allowed attendees to immerse themselves in the world of ‘The Addams Family’. The musical has generated great excitement within the school community, sparking conversations about our next theatrical endeavour.

Following the success of the musical, the Junior Drama Club resumed, attracting over 50 enthusiastic members from Years 8 to 10. The club has been a hub of energy and creativity, with students engaging in activities ranging from script preparation and performance to honing their improvisation skills.

Currently, the Junior Drama Workshop is preparing for the P6 Taster Day performances, where they will present Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The story follows young Charlie Bucket as he wins a golden ticket to the magical world of Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory. Along the way, audiences will meet iconic characters like the eccentric Willy Wonka, the spoiled Veruca Salt, the gluttonous Augustus Gloop, and the television-obsessed Mike Teavee, brought to life by our talented young performers. Auditions held before Easter showcased the dedication and professionalism
of the students, impressing Miss Reynolds and setting the stage for delightful performances. The students are eager to bring this timeless tale to life and share their passion for drama with the P6
audiences.

This year’s successes have set a high bar for the future of Drama and Performing Arts at our school. The talent and enthusiasm of our students, combined with the unwavering support of our dedicated staff, have made this a truly unforgettable year.

We thank everyone who has contributed to making this year a memorable one for the Drama and Performing Arts Department
