TheLower Sixth Form Programme 2005 to 2006 is composed of GCE AdvancedSubsidiary (‘AS’ Levels) and a minority time enrichment programme.  It is designed to provide depth and breadth of study.

Many pupils will take four subjects and the enrichment programme in the Lower Sixth Form.  Pupilswill select three of these subjects which they intend to continue withas A2 subjects in Upper Sixth - thus completing three full ‘A’ levelprogrammes.  The fourth subject will be studied in Lower Sixth only and taken as an ‘AS’ level.  Very able pupils  may  opt  to take  all  four subjects to ‘A’ level.  A number of pupils, who  do  notfulfil the criteria for taking 4 subjects, will be advised to take amaximum of three ‘AS’ subjects along with additional studies plus theenrichment programme.   In such cases the studyof all three subjects would continue into Upper Sixth and the pupilwould complete three full ‘A’ level programmes.  Sincethe purpose of the new structure is to provide a course which hasbreadth and balance, it is recommended that one of the AS subjectsshould be in a contrasting discipline.  The choice of a contrasting subject may also help to ensure coverage of Key Skills.

Whilepupils may wish to consider the range of key skills offered by theirproposed selection of subjects, it must be emphasised that key skillsshould not override the other very important factors governing subjectchoice.

Whilstit may be desirable on the part of individual pupils to change theirinitial decisions regarding A2 subject choices at the end of L.6, itmust be emphasised that this will only be possible within theconstraints of time-tabling and the viability of classes.  No guarantees can be given at this stage.

Please note that as far as the Lower Sixthprogramme is concerned, very occasionally minor restrictions in choicesmay occur, given constraints of classes and viability of classes.  However, every effort is made to accommodate individual pupil choices within the framework presented.
