Ballymena is situated in the north east of Northern Ireland, in Co.Antrim. Belfast, the capital of Northern Ireland is 30 miles south-east. Larne harbour can be reached in less than 35 minutes and it’s only 30 minutes drive to Belfast International Airport.

Ballymena was originally a busy market town and the surrounding farmland in the Braid valley was utilized for sheep and cattle farmers. Ballymena is at the foot of the Antrim Plateau. There are nine glens in the plateau, know as the Glens of Antrim, their names are Glenariffe, Glencloy, Glenarm, Glenballyeamon, Glenann, Glenshesk, Glencorp, Glentaisie and Glendun.

Ballymena is one of the largest towns in Northern Ireland. The surrounding towns and villages have a population of 56,641 people. These villages include Portglenone, Garvagh, Randalstown, Ahoghill, Broughshane, Kells, and Cloughmills. More infomation on these towns can be found at the Ballymena Borough Council website.  Some of these people work in the chain stores such as B&Q, KFC, McDonalds, H&M etc. But many people work in the more well know companies like Gallahers or Michelin. Many people come to shop because of the wide selection of shops like Camerons, McKillens and also some of the high street names such as Marks & Spencers, Sainburys and Tescos. There is also a wide selection of entertainment facilities like the newly refurbished Leisure Centre, Sports Bowl and the newly built cinema. Ballymena did have a hospital but it was transferred to Antrim recently. Now only an outpatients service is available and a health centre.

There are nine post-primary schools in Ballymena, three of which are grammar. Ballymena also offers third level education. The Academy has 88 acres of mature ground situated on the Galgorm Road just west of the town centre. The grounds are very secluded yet within easy walking distance of bus and railway stations. The local library, the leisure centre and shops are easily accessible.
